'AWARDED TO WARD & Co. Ld. 2nd For HEAVY ALE 1896'. Dia.56mm. Drilled and plugged. A note included saying: WARD & Co. 1854-1955 ( from 1923 part of NZB) claims to be the oldest established brewery in Canterbury. In 1881 became a public company after being sold to Douglas and Lee in 1867. In 1890 Ward's took over the City Brewery and Malthouse from Vincent & Co. Wards continued brewing up until 1955.
